Amazon’s New Echo Devices Want Every Room—and the $500 Show 16 Proves It

Amazon’s new Echo lineup has a question for you: how much of your home should Alexa understand? The October 28 launch brings a $499.99 Echo Show 16, a camera-equipped Studio, a sleep-sensing Echo Time, and a smarter Echo Dot. The most interesting upgrade is the job each device is trying to take over.

The $500 Echo Show 16 is the headline

The redesigned Show pairs a 16-inch full HD display with Fire TV, an included remote, and a wall mount. Amazon’s Screen Styles let it act as a family calendar, smart-home dashboard, or photo frame. A favorites bar provides quick access to frequently used functions. That gives the screen a clearer purpose: information you can glance at while your hands are busy.

List pricing is $499.99 for the standard display or $569.99 for Nanomatte. Amazon is advertising $100 off preorders; the product page currently shows a Redeem offer and code CLAIM100. Check eligibility and the final checkout price. Shipping begins later this year. A stand costs extra: $69.99, or $124.99 for swivel and tilt.

The Show also gets a 13-megapixel camera with night vision. Amazon says a button disables the camera and microphones. These are capabilities to evaluate alongside the screen, especially if it will face a busy living space. Source: Amazon’s Show 16 announcement.

Echo Time’s biggest feature is invisible

The $199.99 Echo Time puts a 3.2-inch circular touchscreen on the nightstand without a camera. Its optional smart alarm uses Omnisense, including ultrasound for breathing and proximity, to detect lighter sleep within a configurable 10-to-60-minute alarm window. The screen can brighten gradually for a sunrise-style wake-up.

Amazon says sleep sensing requires opting in and can be disabled in settings or by muting the microphones. The question is whether that extra sensing makes mornings meaningfully better than a basic alarm. We haven’t tested it, so improved sleep is a promise to assess, not a result we can endorse. The Studio sees; the Dot connects

Echo Studio with Home Camera costs $249.99 and adds visual assistance and remote Live View to the speaker. Amazon demonstrates explaining a board game from its box and identifying products. Video calling through compatible Fire TVs is described as coming soon. The camera-free Studio remains available at $219.99.

The new $99.99 Echo Dot is the quieter upgrade: AZ3 processing, a built-in Zigbee/Matter/Thread smart-home hub, and eero extension for an existing compatible eero network. Amazon claims 50% more bass than the previous generation. Its appeal is consolidating a few household jobs in a smaller device. The detail to check before upgrading

Amazon says certain features require Alexa+, included with Prime. Separately, The Verge reports that Show 16 owners can switch off the Alexa Recommendations screen carrying full-screen ads. It also reports that the new customizable homescreens will eventually reach current Shows with a subscription requirement; pricing and timing weren’t confirmed. Don’t assume every software feature will be a free upgrade on your existing display.

PCGeek’s take: Pick the household problem first. A persistent calendar has a different value from better audio, and a bedroom sensor is a different choice from a kitchen screen. The test for this generation is everyday reliability after the launch demos end.
