Android Had 7 Years. Apple Needed One Try: The iPhone Duo Just Embarrassed the Foldable Phone Industry

Samsung helped create the modern foldable-phone market seven years ago. Google, Oppo and others followed. Apple sat back, watched everyone experiment—and then showed up ridiculously late with the iPhone Duo.

And somehow, that might have been the smartest move.

Apple didn’t invent the foldable phone. Not even close.

But after getting my first look at the new iPhone Duo and seeing how Apple approached the hardware and, more importantly, the software, I keep coming back to one slightly insulting question:

Android manufacturers… what exactly have you been doing for the last seven years?

Because the iPhone Duo doesn’t feel like Apple simply took an iPhone, added a hinge and called it a day.

It feels like Apple asked a completely different question:

If we’re going to make an iPhone fold, how should the entire iPhone experience change with it?

That difference is enormous.

And it might explain why Apple’s first-generation foldable already feels like one of the most thoroughly considered foldable phones yet.

Apple Was Seven Years Late—and Somehow That’s the Point

Samsung launched the original Galaxy Fold in 2019.

Apple waited until 2026.

Seven years.

In the technology industry, seven years is an eternity. Samsung deserves enormous credit for taking the risks Apple didn’t. Android manufacturers dealt with fragile displays, awkward hinges, strange aspect ratios, app compatibility problems and some truly chunky early hardware.

They essentially performed seven years of public beta testing.

Apple apparently took notes.

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 and arrives October 23. Closed, there’s a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR display. Open it and you’re looking at a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR display, the largest display Apple has ever put on an iPhone.

Both support ProMotion, Always On and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.

But specifications aren’t what make the Duo fascinating.

It’s what happens between those two screens.

Apple Understands Something About Foldables That Specs Can’t Explain

Here’s the little detail that immediately caught my attention.

Start doing something on the iPhone Duo and then unfold it.

The interface doesn’t behave like the phone suddenly discovered someone plugged in another monitor.

It transforms.

Content reacts as the device folds. Turn the phone and the interface reorients. Flip it and iOS moves the experience to the appropriate display.

Even the two displays use the same aspect ratio, allowing content to scale proportionally between them.

It sounds like a tiny detail.

It’s not.

This is classic Apple.

Apple’s designers obsess over the moment between two states—not merely the states themselves.

Closed → opening → open.

Portrait → landscape.

Inner display → outer display.

Apple designed those transitions as part of the product.

The new display engine can drive both displays simultaneously, allowing the system to maintain fluid transitions between them.

That becomes especially interesting with gaming.

You’re not supposed to think, Okay, I’m changing screens now.

The device is supposed to understand what you’re doing.

Rotate the Duo while you’re playing and iOS can reorient the content. Fold the device and the system can move content to the appropriate display rather than treating folding as an interruption.

That’s what a foldable should feel like.

Not two screens awkwardly sharing custody of your apps.

One computer that happens to change shape.

Meanwhile, Some Android Foldables Still Feel Like Android Phones That Learned a Party Trick

This is where Android manufacturers deserve a little roasting.

For years the industry’s sales pitch has often sounded something like:

“Look! Our phone becomes a tablet!”

Cool.

What happens to the software?

“Well… Android gets bigger.”

I’m exaggerating—but only a little.

Android foldables have improved dramatically, and companies like Samsung and Google deserve credit for pushing multitasking and adaptable interfaces long before Apple entered the category.

But Apple’s approach with iOS 27 feels fundamentally different.

Apple didn’t simply stretch the existing iPhone UI across 7.6 inches.

It rethought the interface around a device that physically changes shape.

Lock Screen controls, the Home Screen Dock and app-navigation controls can move to the side to maximize vertical space. Open the Duo and the Home Screen can show two pages alongside Today View.

The status bar has been condensed into a flexible circular interface tucked into the corner.

Even the Dynamic Island has been redesigned vertically along the side of the displays.

That’s not “iPhone, but wider.”

That’s a UI designed around the hardware.

And that is exactly what Apple means when it talks endlessly about designing hardware and software together.

Annoying marketing phrase?

Absolutely.

But with the Duo, you can actually see the point.

Apple Finally Gives the iPhone Real Multitasking

Then there’s Split View.

For the first time on an iPhone, you can put two apps side by side.

You can swap apps quickly, save app pairs and even open two windows from the same app.

Imagine researching a product in one Safari window while comparing prices in another.

Or Slack beside a document.

Or talking with Siri while keeping whatever you’re asking about visible on the other side of the display.

Third-party developers are already adapting their software. Netflix can move from Clips on the outside screen into a larger viewing experience when the Duo opens. Zoom can use the expanded display to show shared content alongside call participants. Slack can expose far more of your workspace simultaneously.

This is the difference between giving someone a larger screen and actually deciding what the larger screen is for.

And Then Apple Went After the Foldable’s Most Annoying Problem: THE CREASE

Every foldable owner knows it.

That valley running straight through your expensive futuristic screen.

You spend $2,000 on a phone and then spend the next two years pretending you don’t see the miniature drainage ditch running through the middle of it.

Apple didn’t completely eliminate the crease.

Let’s be clear about that.

It’s still there.

But Apple attacked the problem from multiple directions.

The Duo’s inner display uses a special nano-texture finish that reduces glare and reflections. Because reflections make the depression of a crease much easier for your eyes to detect, reducing those reflections helps camouflage it.

Early hands-on impressions are encouraging. The Wall Street Journal’s Nicole Nguyen reported that the crease was barely visible when the Duo was open and appeared subtler than the one on Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8, though it could still be felt by touch.

Apple went further underneath the screen.

The inner display uses high-strength glass above and below the folding panel, while custom adhesives allow the layers to slide slightly past one another as the device folds—Apple compares the movement to pages in a book. A titanium plate reinforces the structure underneath.

The hinge itself contains more than 100 components and supports the center of the display when fully opened.

And the nano-textured cover layer uses a custom polymer Apple says has up to 40 percent greater stiffness than comparable materials used elsewhere in the industry.

In other words, Apple didn’t solve the crease by pretending physics stopped existing in Cupertino.

It engineered around how humans perceive the crease.

That’s arguably even more interesting.

Samsung spent years trying to make the ditch shallower.

Apple apparently asked:

What if your eyes simply stopped noticing it as much?

That’s such an Apple solution it hurts.

The Tiny Details Are What Make the Duo Feel Different

The deeper you look, the more little ideas appear.

Prop the Duo partially open and it becomes its own stand.

StandBy can work on the inner or outer display—even when the phone isn’t charging.

Take a photo of someone and Duo Preview lets them see the live camera preview on the outside screen.

Want a higher-quality selfie? Use the rear cameras while framing yourself with the outer display.

Trying to photograph a kid who refuses to look at the camera? Apple created Kid Cue, which can show Peanuts animations on the outer display to attract their attention.

That’s hilariously specific.

And that’s precisely my point.

Some engineer or designer actually sat in a room and thought:

“You know what parents struggle with? Getting their kid to look at the damn camera.”

Then Apple built a feature for it.

There is also Smart Take, which uses on-device AI to recognize when subjects are posing and automatically capture the shot.

FaceTime can even use both sides of the phone so someone physically next to you can participate through the outer display rather than everyone squeezing around one screen.

None of these features alone will sell two million phones.

Collectively, though, they demonstrate something important:

Apple thought about what having two displays actually enables.

The Hardware Is Absolutely Ridiculous Too

Underneath everything is Apple’s new A20 Pro, manufactured on a 2nm process.

Apple says its six-core CPU is up to 20 percent faster than the A19 Pro, while the seven-core GPU is up to 40 percent faster and more power efficient. Memory bandwidth increases 50 percent.

And because folding phones create interesting thermal problems, Apple connected the chip package directly to a custom vapor chamber designed to maintain performance during demanding workloads such as gaming.

There are two batteries—one on either side of the fold—with software making them behave as a unified power system.

Apple rates the Duo for up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner display and as much as 44 hours using the outer display, or roughly 24 hours of mixed usage when both displays are used equally.

The frame is Grade 5 titanium.

The outer display gets Ceramic Shield 2.

The back gets Ceramic Shield.

And somehow Apple managed an IP68 water- and dust-resistance rating, something worth paying attention to on a device with a hinge containing more than 100 moving components.

Open, it’s just 5.2mm thick.

Closed, it’s 11.3mm.

This is first-generation Apple hardware doing some very un-first-generation things.

But No, Apple Didn’t Win Everything

Before the Apple fans start levitating out of their chairs, there are compromises.

The iPhone Duo costs $1,999 just to get through the door.

That’s laptop money.

It’s also thicker when folded than several modern Android competitors.

There’s no Face ID. Apple uses Touch ID in the side button instead.

You don’t get the same dedicated telephoto setup as Apple’s Pro phones, either. The rear system consists of a 48MP Fusion Main and 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide, with an optical-quality 2x option coming from the main sensor.

And until people have used these phones for months—or years—we have no idea how that complicated folding display will age in the real world.

Samsung has something Apple doesn’t:

Seven years of experience shipping foldable phones to actual customers.

That matters.

Android manufacturers deserve enormous credit for building this category while Apple watched from the sidelines.

But This Is Why “Apple Waits Until It’s Perfect” Refuses to Die

Apple fans love saying:

“Apple doesn’t do it first. Apple does it right.”

It’s an obnoxious phrase.

It’s also not universally true. Apple has shipped plenty of questionable first-generation products.

But the iPhone Duo might become one of the strongest examples supporting the argument.

Apple didn’t invent folding displays.

It didn’t invent multitasking.

It didn’t invent exterior displays.

It didn’t invent hinge-based phones.

Apple’s trick was taking all those concepts and asking how they should behave as one coherent product.

That’s what competitors should worry about.

Because hardware specifications are relatively easy to copy.

Animations can be copied.

Materials eventually become available elsewhere.

Hinges improve.

Processors get faster.

But building an operating system where hardware, apps, animations, multitasking, cameras, orientation and displays all understand the physical state of the device?

That’s harder.

Seven Years Later, Android Just Got Its Wake-Up Call

Samsung deserves credit for creating the modern foldable market.

Without the Galaxy Fold taking arrows in 2019, there’s probably no iPhone Duo today.

Samsung, Google, Oppo and other Android manufacturers did the dangerous work first.

But that’s exactly why Apple’s entrance is so embarrassing.

They had a seven-year head start.

Apple walked into their category with a first-generation product and immediately attacked some of the exact problems foldables have spent years normalizing: the crease, awkward software transitions, strange screen continuity and the question of why a folding phone actually needs to fold beyond simply giving you a larger display.

Android manufacturers built phones that fold.

Apple appears determined to build an operating system that understands folding.

There’s a difference.

The iPhone Duo isn’t perfect. It’s absurdly expensive, it’s missing some Pro features, and Apple is hilariously late to the party.

But after seven years of watching Android manufacturers rehearse…

Apple finally walked onto the stage, stole the microphone and reminded everyone why being first and being finished are two very different things.

And somewhere inside Samsung headquarters, somebody is probably staring at that barely visible crease and muttering:

“You’ve got to be kidding me.”
