iPhone Duo Screens Are Cracking—and Apple Has Responded

A new folding iPhone should not become a support ticket before setup is finished. Yet that is what one Reddit owner says happened to their iPhone Duo. Other owners have posted photos of bright lines across the inner screen, turning the launch-weekend conversation from “look at that display” to “what happened at the hinge?”

Now there is an important update: AppleInsider reports that Apple has acknowledged an inner-display issue affecting a small number of iPhone Duo units and is directing affected owners to AppleCare for a replacement. The reports deserve attention. They do not give us a reliable failure rate.

JerryRigEverything’s durability video adds another reason to think carefully about the hinge. But the owner reports, the sand test and the case you buy are three different pieces of this story. Here is what each actually tells us.

Owners are posting photos—and reporting failures within hours

In a photo post on r/iPhoneDuo, u/leftyhyzer16 describes the hinge becoming tight after only a few folds, then making a loud pop when they pushed past the resistance. Their update says an Apple Store in Dallas replaced the phone that day.

Another owner, u/scary_duck23, posted photos of a display fault within 24 hours of collecting a preorder. They describe resistance and a cracking sound. Their later update reports a wait for replacement stock, illustrating why one owner’s service experience does not guarantee the same turnaround elsewhere.

These are owners’ accounts, not independently inspected phones. Photos document visible symptoms; they cannot establish every device’s history or the cause inside its hinge. A busy thread also counts attention, not the percentage of all Duos that fail.

What Apple has said

According to AppleInsider’s October 26 report, Apple says affected users should contact AppleCare for a replacement. The publication also reports follow-up remarks that most units will not experience the issue and that the failures being described occur shortly after first opening.

AppleInsider’s own check with staff at 20 Genius Bars found four affected phones. That is a limited service-store snapshot, with no worldwide sales denominator. It cannot tell us your individual odds, but it gives useful context alongside the alarming photos.

What JerryRigEverything’s sand test actually shows

In JerryRigEverything’s original durability video, around 10:02, the Duo is exposed to substantial sand, dust and dirt. The hinge then stops closing fully. Later, around 11:37, a separate reverse-bend test produces permanent display-line damage.

JerryRigEverything’s destructive durability test. Dirt exposure begins around 10:02; reverse bending follows around 11:37.

The important distinction is the sequence and the amount of debris. This is not a measured demonstration that one grain—or a tiny amount—will break every Duo hinge. It also does not prove sand caused the failures reported by owners during ordinary setup.

It does show why keeping grit away from moving hinge parts matters. Also worth making clear: the video’s case sponsorship features dbrand. The Mkeke option below is PCgeek’s separate shopping suggestion, not a JerryRigEverything endorsement.

Why the hinge is getting attention

iFixit’s teardown compared reported damage locations with hinge modeling and CT scans. Its analysis identifies a possible stress hotspot near the central display support. That is a proposed explanation, not a confirmed diagnosis for every failed phone.

In a separate fluorescent-powder experiment, iFixit found that some particles reached the hinge’s moving parts. It explicitly says that experiment was not an IP certification test. Together, the findings give us reasons to care about both internal support stresses and external debris, without assuming they are the same failure mechanism.

Where the Mkeke full-hinge-protection case fits

If you want a clear case that also covers the hinge area, the Mkeke case for iPhone Duo with full hinge protection is an option to consider. Its Amazon listing describes an integrated hinge connection joining both halves, a clear polycarbonate construction and raised screen and camera bezels.

That coverage is relevant if an exposed hinge is what concerns you when choosing a case. We have not independently tested this model’s drop resistance or dust protection. A hinge cover is not evidence of a dustproof seal, and there is no evidence here that this case prevents the internal display failures Apple has acknowledged.

Before buying, confirm the 2026 iPhone Duo variant. The listing says screen and camera protectors are not included. It also displays reviews for other iPhone models, so check the variant attached to any review you use to judge it.

Check the selected model, current price, seller and return terms before ordering.

If your Duo starts resisting or the display develops a line

Stop forcing the hinge and contact Apple Support. Photograph the fault and explain when it appeared. A case purchase is not a remedy for a phone that is already malfunctioning.

Apple’s handling guidance says to keep sand and grit away from the Duo’s hinge and make sure it is clean before opening. It also warns against removing the inner display’s integral cover layer. For cleaning, follow Apple’s instructions; do not blast grit into the mechanism with compressed air.

Protect the hinge, but keep the claims in perspective

The photos are worrying enough to justify asking questions. Apple’s acknowledgment makes this more than a Reddit argument. The unanswered question is how many phones are affected and exactly why each one failed.

For an otherwise working Duo, a correctly fitted hinge-covering case is worth considering alongside careful handling. Choose it for the coverage it offers. If your display has already cracked, pursue service first.
