Wired Headphones Are Back. Bose Just Bet $99 on It.

Ask why people are plugging in wired headphones again and you’ll get the same answers over and over: no charging, no pairing, nothing expensive to lose. It isn’t just a vibe on social media, either. Sales are finally moving in the same direction, and Bose just released its first new wired earbuds in more than a decade.

The numbers: up for the first time in years

Market research firm Circana’s US retail tracking, as reported by Bloomberg and others, shows wired headphone revenue rising about 20% in the first weeks of 2026. That follows a five-year decline that included a $42 million drop in 2024. Circana’s figures reported for 2025 show a smaller rise of about 3% for the full year.

Keep the scale in mind. That 20% covers a short window early in the year, and wired is still a small slice of a market that wireless earbuds dominate. Wired headphones are growing again. They aren’t taking over.

Why people say they switched back

Read through the Reddit threads on this, from r/NoStupidQuestions to r/Earbuds, and the reasons fall into a few clear groups:

  • Nothing to charge or pair. Plug in and it works, every time. No dead battery, no Bluetooth handshake, no case to keep topped up.
  • Cheap to lose. People who keep losing wireless buds would rather lose a cheap wired pair.
  • No dropouts or delay. Anyone editing video or making music notices Bluetooth latency. A wire doesn’t have any.
  • Fit. Some people say wired buds stay in better, and a cable makes them harder to lose. Others find the cord annoying, so it really is personal.
  • The look. The white cord is back as a fashion statement, pushed by celebrity street style and the “analog” trend on TikTok.

The trade-off people bring up most is the cable itself. It snags, it tangles, and eventually it breaks, usually right at the plug. That’s why wired works best at a desk or on a commute, and less well at the gym.

Bose’s $99 bet on the trend

The Bose Noise Cancelling Wired Earbuds are a $99 pair that plugs in over USB-C, so there’s no battery and nothing to charge. They still have Bose’s QuietControl noise cancellation, with Quiet, Aware and Off modes, which is rare in a wired pair. You also get an inline remote and mic, several ear tip sizes and stability wings, and a carrying case. Bloomberg reported that preorders shipped from October 15 through Bose and Best Buy.

Two things to know before you buy. The connector is USB-C only, so they won’t plug into a Lightning iPhone or a 3.5mm headphone jack without an adapter. And the noise cancellation draws its power through that USB-C connection instead of a battery. We couldn’t find the Bose pair on Amazon when we checked on November 5, so Bose.com is the place to buy it.

Cheaper ways to try wired again

You don’t need noise cancellation to see whether wired suits you. These are the simple options, all sold by Amazon:

PCGeek’s take

This comeback is about tired people, not audiophiles. Wireless earbuds solved the cable and swapped in a battery that wears out, a case you can lose and a connection that drops at the worst moment. For a lot of everyday listening, a $20 pair you never have to think about is simply the better tool. Bose adding noise cancellation at $99 shows the big brands take the trend seriously. Just don’t throw out your wireless buds for the gym yet.
